Scrap lead Brisbane
Scrap lead Brisbane: identify safe, sellable lead before you quote
Lead turns up as roof flashing, wheel balance weights, old pipe and batteries across Brisbane renovations and workshops, and each form needs different handling before a scrap lead quote. Separate clean lead from contaminated material, and keep any batteries intact rather than draining or dismantling them yourself.

Material overview01
Start with the lead form
Lead is dense and low-volume next to steel or aluminium, so a modest bucket of flashing or wheel weights can weigh far more than it looks. What drives the assessment is the form and purity — clean sheet, pipe or ingot reads differently from painted, tarred or mixed lead — and whether the load includes anything that needs care rather than casual handling. A stack of flashing pulled from a Queenslander re-roof in Annerley is a different quote to a bucket of wheel balance weights swept up at a Rocklea tyre shop, even though both are scrap lead, and a box of old car batteries is different again.
Common enquiry examples
- Roof flashing and soundproofing sheet
- Wheel balance weights, clip-on and stick-on
- Old lead water pipe
- Lead cable sheathing
- Dive and fishing sinkers
- Range and ballast lead
- Lead-acid batteries from cars, trucks and forklifts
Acceptance is load-specific
Grade guide02
How lead is described
Use the closest description you can support, then show the material clearly. Final identification is based on the actual parcel.
- Clean lead sheet, flashing and pipe
- Roofing flashing, soundproofing sheet, offcuts and old plumbing pipe without paint, tar, render or other coatings attached. Photograph a clean surface as well as the whole parcel.
- Wheel balance weights
- Clip-on weights carry a steel clip and stick-on weights carry adhesive tape; many newer weights are zinc or steel rather than lead. Keep the two types separate and say whether they have already been sorted by metal.
- Lead cable sheathing and mixed lead
- Lead-sheathed telecommunications cable, roofing lead with paint, tar or render attached, and other mixed items are assessed as mixed lead rather than a clean grade.
- Lead-acid batteries
- Car, truck, forklift and UPS batteries contain sulfuric acid and are handled separately from clean scrap lead. Say whether they are intact, drained or already processed by a battery recycler before including them in an enquiry.
Quote basis03
What can change the assessment
A material name is only the start. Composition, preparation, quantity and handling details make the quote useful.
- Form and purity
- Clean sheet, pipe, ingot and sorted wheel weights carry a different recoverable yield from painted, tarred or mixed lead.
- Attachments and contamination
- Steel clips, adhesive tape, paint, tar, render and other metals mixed through a lead parcel change how it is assessed.
- Battery condition
- Whether batteries are intact, leaking, drained or already processed by a specialist affects how, and whether, they can be included in the same enquiry.
- Quantity and measured weight
- Lead is dense, so give a realistic estimate by weight rather than volume. Final weight-based terms depend on the measured net weight.
MetalBase does not publish a generic rate on this guide. Request a current assessment for the actual material and confirm the terms before handover.

Prepare four useful details
Clear photos and realistic measurements reduce avoidable back-and-forth.
- 01
Sort by form
Keep clean sheet and pipe separate from wheel weights, cable sheathing and mixed or painted lead. - 02
Separate wheel weight types
Group clip-on and stick-on weights apart where practical, and set aside any that turn out to be zinc or steel rather than lead. - 03
Leave batteries intact
Keep batteries upright with terminals protected and do not attempt to drain, crack or dismantle them yourself. Say whether a specialist has already handled them. - 04
Estimate weight, not volume
Lead is dense — a small bucket can weigh more than a much larger volume of steel. Give a realistic weight estimate along with the Brisbane suburb.

Are all wheel balance weights made of lead?
No. Many newer wheel weights are zinc or steel rather than lead, and the two can look similar. Keep them separate where possible and note if they have already been sorted.
Can lead-acid batteries be included in a scrap lead enquiry?
They need separate handling because of their acid content. Say whether the batteries are intact, drained or already processed by a specialist rather than including them loose with clean lead.
Does painted or tarred flashing count as clean lead?
No. Coatings, render and other attachments move the material into a mixed-lead grade. Show the coating in your photos rather than presenting it as clean sheet.
Are scrap lead prices published on this page?
No. Form, purity, contamination, battery condition, quantity and market movement can all affect the commercial basis. Request a current assessment for the actual material.
Can MetalBase collect scrap lead in Brisbane?
Customer-site collection is available, with material, minimum volume, access, equipment, timing and terms confirmed for the proposed load and address.
